recomScan - the standard for the automated analysis of line immunoassays
recomScan is a software for the automated evaluation of immunoblots (Western Blot and Line Assay test strips). The developed test strips produced are digitalised using scanning techniques and the band patterns are assessed via a defined algorithm. The software supports the operator throughout the entire working process, from the importing of the work lists via strip evaluation and findings through to the exporting of results into the laboratory information system.
Traditionally, immunoblots are mostly visually assessed. Several factors can, therefore, lead to a non-uniform evaluation of results:
The human eye can distinguish only up to approximately 64 shades of grey. In the borderline area, the visual assessor also tends to allow himself/herself to be influenced by the scope of the strips to be assessed (band width, background colour, adjacent test strips). In addition, the observation scope varies from one operator to the next as to whether a limiting band is already a positive band. Careless errors may arise when evaluating a large number of test strips.
recomScan also yields reproducible results in the borderline area. Over 750 shades of grey are evaluated. Absolute brightness values are set.
Reading and transmission errors may appear during the manual transfer of results into laboratory EDP systems. Reading and transmission errors are avoided by the standardised exchange of data with the laboratory-EDP.
Original strips cannot be permanently archived. Even if totally protected against light, the bands fade over time and copied strips are not of a sufficiently good quality. A subsequent, comparative examination of several test results for one patient is feasible only by spending considerably more time and effort on research. The test strip scans can be archived easily and safely and are available for subsequent examination at the click of the mouse.
Advantages of recomScan
- Objective, reproducible band assessment
- Safe data transfer with laboratory EDP
- Durable archiving of the test strips
- The quantitative analysis of the antigen bands allows complex comparison analyses, as needed for example for avidity determination
- Easy interpretation of complex band patterns
- Flexible scanning of the test strips
- CE: The assessment of the MIKROGEN strip tests by the use of recomScan is validated and conform to the EC directive 98/79/EC on in vitro diagnostics.
- The automated analysis with recomScan is generally available for all MIKROGEN strip tests
